THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS

Don't Let 'Oops' Get You Down

By Malcolm Stacy

Hello Share Shifters,

We all make mistakes. And we can afford to make errors 45% of the time. If we succeed for the other 55% we will do very well at the golden game as the years roll by.

By mistakes, I mean choosing the wrong share. It will have been the right stock at the time, but the future is unpredictable - and it could be the wrong share in the end.

There are also what seem to be more serious mistakes. And we can all make them, too. Me more than most, I hazard.

There was a time when I bought Smiths Group (SMIN). I actually thought I was buying Smith Kline Beecham. I did not want Smiths Group because they make stuff I am not wildly interested in. I am interested in drug development.

The Week Ahead

Ladbrokes, Bellway, MPC minutes

There are lots of booze-based firms reporting next week, including Diageo, SABMiller and the Spirit Pub Group, while if soft drinks are more your thing, Britvic reports on Thursday; the Chelmsford-based drinks producer is currently in merger talks with Irn Bru maker AG Barr.

After a week on the booze it is rarely a good idea to visit the bookmakers, so watch out for Ladbrokes' third quarter update on Thursday.

One of the key things will be an update on the new Ladbrokes.com web site, which is scheduled to be launches this quarter. The bookie's online offering has been overshadowed by perennial rival William Hill and any delay to the launch will probably see the shares get a shellacking.

On the housing front Bellway will report preliminary results on Tuesday, and Panmure Gordon predicts profits will be up 49% on last year.

The broker expects Bellway to report the completion of 5,226 units over the full year at an average selling price of £187,000, which would represent a 6.5% improvement on the previous year's average. Net margins are likely to have improved by two-and-a-quarter percentage points to 11.0%, Panmure Gordon thinks.

The market consensus is for profit before tax of £98.2m on revenue of £985m. Earnings per share are tipped to surge to 61.48p, paving the way for the full year dividend to be hiked to 17.15p from 12.50p, if analysts covering the stock are to be believed.

Switching to the macroeconomic scene, minutes from the October meeting of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

The Bank's current round of quantitative easing (QE) ends next month and economists will be scouring the minutes to see whether there are any clues as to whether the QE tap will be turned on again.

MPC member Martin Weale, for one, has expressed concern about sanctioning more QE while inflation remains above the Bank's 2.0% target rate. Weale's colleagues Ben Broadbent and Spencer Dale have also recently gone on record to warn about inflation risks.

The Bank of England increased its asset purchase pot by £50bn to £375bn in July.
