THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS

Don't Let 'Oops' Get You Down

By Malcolm Stacy

Hello Share Fans,

There has been a lot of worry on the financial markets. Which makes the present bull market rather surprising. It's welcome just the same.

There is a growing feeling, I think, that though the Euro bosses keep on kicking the can down the road, at least nothing really nasty has happened.

Spain is still in a mess. So is Italy, though things are improving a bit there. Ireland is not out of the woods, by any means. And debt-ridden Greece is full of unrest as well as poverty.

Things could get worse in Europe. And the news is full of people saying aloud that they think it will. There have also been pronouncements that British banks are still short of enough necessary cash to get out of another big world crisis, should it come upon us.

The Week Ahead

Travelodge rebirth could prove bothersome for Whitbread

After a strong second quarter, albeit abetted by one-off boosts, Whitbread might have found the third quarter tougher going, given that it revealed that trading had become variable on a month-by-month basis.

"We think that the Travelodge CVA [company voluntary arrangement] will lead to a stronger competitor to Premier Inn with a more consistent product and even more competitive pricing. It is therefore unfortunate that Premier Inn's sales and marketing director, Gerard Tempest will leave in November to join Carnival UK. Combined with aggressive pricing and growth plans from international operators such as Tune Hotels we think Premier Inn will find the going tougher over the next 18 months," Panmure Gordon predicts.

On Thursday, department store group Debenhams releases results for the year to the end of August, with the market expecting pre-tax profits of £159m on sales of £2.54bn.

The earnings per share figure is expected to rise to 9.36p while the full-year dividend is seen coming in at around 3.1p, up from 3.0p last year.

Seymour Pierce recently raised its price target from 100p to 110p for the stock while sticking with its "hold" rating.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

No Fear Finance: an introduction to finance and investment for the non-finance professional

By Guy Fraser-Sampson

A book review by Richard Gill of t1ps.com

To some people the world of finance can be as complicated to understand as medicine or particle physics. This seems sad given that money is a vital part of our everyday lives - unlike brain surgery or splitting the atom. But in No Fear Finance Guy Fraser-Sampson attempts to show that finance is not such a scary subject as it can sound and that anyone can learn to understand it by taking on some basic principals.

The book, which after a short introduction to why the subject can be difficult to understand, introduces all of the key topics involved in finance which people should be aware of in today's world. It starts right at the beginning of the business process, with the various legal structures of enterprise explained. Moving on through basic accounting, bonds, the time value of money, equities and working capital, we then learn about more difficult subjects such as derivatives and the portfolio management concepts, alpha and beta. Each chapter also includes a useful summary section, with the main points of the text presented in an easy to read, bullet point format.
