| Sunday 7 October 2012 THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS Don't Let Falls Get You Down
By Malcolm Stacy Hello Share Kids,
Let's have a weekend look at a little bit of psychology, which can be a bit discouraging in the share world. And let's try and put things into context to stop us all feeling miserable.
Now you are probably like me. When the Footsie falls on the day, we get depressed. Perhaps not a lot, but enough to take the shine off the world and perhaps plonk us into a bit of a bad mood.
This can also happen if the Footsie is flat on the day. We should be glad that our shares have not lost value. But we hope to be in profit day after day, so even inaction is a downer.

Recruiters Hays and Michael Page kick the week off on Monday with interim management statements.
For Michael Page, Peel Hunt thinks trends seen at the interims are unlikely to have changed materially, except perhaps that the slowdown in Asian growth may have accelerated. The outlook will likely remain bleak, the broker reckons.
As for Hays, the same broker say markets are clearly still challenging. "Asian markets, where NFI [net fee income] is weighted towards banking, are weak and European and RoW [Rest of World] markets excluding Germany and Canada have become increasingly tough. Australia is likely to be slowing, as the pause in mining resources activity will likely [have an] impact {on} other sectors in that region," Peel Hunt says.
On Friday, builders' merchant Travis Perkins issues an interim management statement, and Panmure Gordon is expecting the group to have made further progress, despite tough market conditions.
The broker thinks the key issues will be: Spending outlook - public versus private and housing vs commercial; Weather, Jubilee/Olympics disruption; Competitive environment post corporate activity in sector.

A book review by Emanuil Halicioglu The whole is worth the sum of its parts. Even the most complex structured bond, credit arbitrage strategy or hedge trade can be broken down into its component parts, and if we understand the elemental components, we can then value the whole. We can quantify the risk that is hedged and the risk that is left as the residual exposure. If we learn to view all financial trades and securities as engineered packages of building blocks, then we can analyse in which structures some parts may be cheap and some may be rich. It is this relative value arbitrage principle that drives all modern trading and investment.
