A MESSAGE FROM TOM

Peering into the abyss and buying or giving up

Most of our actions as investors are driven by human psychology. We like to think that we are all rational human beings and act accordingly. We are not. How we feel about life is a mirror for how we can feel about shares.

The Week Ahead

Recruiters, house builders, AB Foods

Next week sees two big recruitment agencies, Michael Page and Hays, update the market, and if Thursday's report from smaller rival Robert Walters is anything to go by, the news may not be good.

Better news is expected from house builders Bovis and Galliford Try if recent trading statements from sector peers Persimmon and Taylor Wimpey are any sort of guide.

Associated British Foods, which on Friday announced the acquisition of the Elephant Atta ethnic flour brand from Premier Foods, updates the market on Thursday. Attention will probably be on the group's Primark clothing chain, as usual, but the Elephant Atta purchase is a useful reminder that there is more to the company than Primark.

Panmure Gordon expects the tone of the trading update to be similar to the previous report with "strong earnings growth expected to be delivered for the year to September, driven by particularly impress growth in the Sugar division."

But who were Graham and Dodd?
