Hedge Fund Market Wizards: How Winning Traders Win

By Jack D. Schwager

A book review by James Faulkner of WatsHot.com

Hedge Fund Market Wizards costs just £21.59 in the Square Mile Bookstore and can be bought by clicking here.

As of April 2012 the hedge fund industry reached a record high of $2.13 trillion total assets under management, having surpassed the previous high of $1.93 trillion in 2008 before the onset of the financial crisis. While the industry remains a relatively small component of the financial sector at large (it accounted for just 1.1% of the total funds and assets held by financial institutions as of 2009), it is often said to attract the crème de la crème of industry talent, and is home to the money of the some of the richest people on the planet.

Unsurprisingly then, traders and investors are keen to gain an insight into the minds of hedge fund "wizards" - and who better to open a window into them than Jack Schwager, the much-acclaimed author of Market Wizards, The New Market Wizards and Stock Market Wizards? On top of his literary pursuits, Schwager is also manages a fund of hedge fund portfolios called the Market Wizards Funds for the Fortune Group, a fund of hedge funds business based in London. Schwager uses his industry knowledge and experience to help each interviewee distil his particular trading style in much greater depth than a mere financial journalist would be able to achieve; it is even possible to detect a smattering of intellectual sparring from time to time.

The book comprises 15 chapters split into three categories: "Macro Men", who generally trade commodities and forex; "Multi-Strategy Players", who take a more eclectic approach, incorporating a number of different tools to beat the market; and "Equity Traders", who specialise in shares. Equity investors may be somewhat disappointed with this last section, which is somewhat brief for my taste; but this probably reflects Schwager's own background in futures and commodities. That said, it is probably the biggest criticism I can offer.

While Hedge Fund Market Wizards will certainly get a better reception among traders than investors, it is nevertheless a worthwhile read for both parties.

The value of investments can go down as well as up. The past is not necessarily a guide to future performance. Investing in shares can lose you part or all of your capital although the potential returns are theoretically unlimited. The difference between the buy share price and the sell share price for smaller company shares (penny shares) can be significant. Profits from dealing in shares may be liable to tax - the level of tax and bases of relief from tax are subject to change. Changes in the rates of exchange may have an adverse effect on the value or price of an investment in sterling terms if it is denominated in a foreign currency. Financial spread betting is a high risk investment, losses from which are potentially unlimited. Some of the shares recommended on this site will be smaller company shares. By their nature such investments can be relatively illiquid and thus hard to trade. And that makes such investments more of a high risk than larger company shares (or 'small caps'/'penny shares'). UK-Analyst.com defines a smaller company share as any stock traded on AIM or PLUS or which has a market capitalisation of less than GBP300 million.
