| | Minesite Weekly Roundup 8th - 15th October 2012 | | | Dear Minesite subscriber, Last week the ban on cash sales for scrap metal came into law in the UK, and companies have just over a month to comply.
There's no doubt that the motivation behind such a law is sound. There have been some appalling cases in recent years, including the theft of cable from an MRI scanner in Nuffield Hospital in Shrewsbury, and the theft of cable from a generator at Llandough Hospital in Wales.
The stolen metal is always destined for a cash buyer with dubious morals, but who, until now, wasn't actually breaking the law.
But this is not a new problem. In its latest incarnation, it tends to be copper that thieves target, but once-upon-a-time it was lead. Fifty years ago stealing lead from church roofs was such a serious problem that Peter Sellars was able to do a turn in 'Heavens Above' as the hapless priest of a church which suffered that very fate, and at the hands of its own congregation.
And even earlier, during World War Two, the government itself exhorted the nation to strip itself bare of metal, including the iron railings from fences, some of which have not been replaced to this day. Some doubt the economic efficacy of that campaign, but its propaganda value appears to have been long-lasting: the fixtures and fitting of Britain have tangible value.
How long that will last remains to be seen. The latest round of quantitative easing pushed up base metal prices temporarily, but iron ore has weakened as the global economic outlook continues to be gloomy, and there's every likelihood that base metals prices will fall away again if the printing presses ease up. Nickel has already given up ground.
But copper continues strong, which is bad news for hospitals and for commuters periodically inconvenienced by the theft of signal cabling, but good news at least for copper miners.
Gold too remains strong, and in a recent report from broker RFC Ambrian, a strong case is made that mineral sands will do well too over the next year or two.
But how to trade the commodities, without resorting to cash deals for cabling? Look no further for advice than our 91st Minesite forum, at which our guest speaker will be Neil Jamieson of ETF Securities, a pioneer in exchange-traded commodities.
But for those who still favour the more old fashioned approach, some very interesting companies will present their stories too.
Condor Gold continues to find more gold in Nicaragua, and more favour on the stockmarket.
Gunson Resources has found a big backer for its mineral sands project in Australia, and now needs a just a tad more funding to bring the whole thing into production.
And our fourth presenter, Leyshon Resources, remains well positioned to take advantage of continued growth in the Chinese economy, through a natural gas project and a big potential coal deal.
It should be a fascinating event. 91st Minesite Forum Wednesday 24th October 2012 | Sponsored By Wednesday 24th October 2012 91ST MINESITE FORUM ***NEW VENUE*** The Brewery Chiswell Street London EC1Y 4SD (Nearest stations are Moorgate and Liverpool Street)
