Should we be surprised that the fate of Italy now lies in the hands of a professional comedian? At least it's an improvement on the amateur comedian who ran the show before Mario Monti took over, although actually things don't look quite so amusing now.
In contrast to the antics and populism of Silvio Berlusconi, Mr Monti chose to run the country as any unaccountable bureaucrat would efficiently but not in accordance with the will of the people.
That left a democratic deficit which the Italian electorate has now corrected by awarding 25 per cent of the vote to a man who wants to take Italy out of the Euro and devalue.
Not a bad idea, and as Mr Grillo himself says, electing a comedian is a whole lot better than electing a fascist or a communist. At least in the short term.
But as the old saying goes, what markets hate most is uncertainty. Which is why equities dropped on the inconclusive outcome of the Italian election, and gold and Italian gilts rose. Gilts jumped in a couple of days by more than they would normally in a year.
And while gold didn't increase by much, it was enough to indicate that the buyers will be back in force if the situation gets any worse than it already is.
Which it will. How can it get better, unless Mr Grillo gets his way and Italy devalues? Voters hate austerity, but they need it. And when a patient won't take its medicine, it only gets sicker and contagion spreads.
Meanwhile, over in the US, US$85 billion worth of cuts have just been voted through accidentally would that Chancellor Osborne had it so easy with his own austerity package. Is this any way to run a global economy?
If in any way you think the answer is "no", then the place of refuge is clearly in the tried and tested arena of gold, and gold equities, which are now beginning to look severely discounted.
Last week, in amongst our extensive coverage of the wider mining sector, we took a close look at six gold companies: Serabi, Patagonia, Radius, Orosur, Colossus and Minera IRL. Next week we'll take a look at Condor Gold and Carpathian, amongst others.
So, for all your junior gold coverage, keep it with Minesite.
