Oilbarrel Newsletter 24th January 2013

Oilbarrel.com Informed comment and independent oil and gas news
Oilbarrel Weekly Roundup 17th - 24th January 2013
Weekly Review

Another year and another set of Oilbarrel.com conferences. Our first of 2013 is on February 7 and is at The Brewery on Chiswell Street in the City of London. We have settled back well here where we started our gatherings in 2004. Many attendees have commentated favourably on our move back to this venue.

They like to be in a “state of the art” conference centre with the flexibility given by having a choice of various sized rooms available. Also, I suspect it is because you get rather a better coffee break and definitely a better lunch at The Brewery than you did at the Merchant Taylors Hall where we held our events for a couple of years.

On February 7 we have a strong and varied card to begin our 2013 programme. Tethys Petroleum is listed on Canada’s TSX and also on the main market of the LSE and is a first time presenter at Oilbarrel. It has operations in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It recently signed a key farm-out deal with Total and China’s CNODC for its Bokhtar PSC in Tajikistan.

Still in this part of the world Australian junior Jupiter Energy is focused on Kazakhstan, where it expects to deliver production of 1,400 bopd from its 100 per cent held Block 31 in Q1 2013. The company is quoted on the ASX and AIM.

From what you might call another frontier area we have Petro Matad. The company, which has presented at Oilbarre l before ,holds large tracts of under-explored Mongolia, where it is undertaking Greenfield exploration work. Following a series of management changes, the company is acquiring new seismic to mature prospects for drilling in 2014.

Closer to home Lansdowne Oil & Gas is focused on the Celtic Sea offshore Ireland. The AIM-listed company has a 20 per cent interest in Providence’s break through Barryroe oilfield and has rights, through its wholly owned subsidiaries, to four other Standard Exploration licences and one Licensing Option in the Irish offshore.

Closer to home still, Canada’s Antrim Energy, which is listed on AIM and the TSX, is focused on the UK North Sea, where it has a rising production profile and a portfolio of appraisal and development projects.

Petroceltic International Holds Firm As Hostage Crisis Overshadows Algerian Efforts To Win International Investment

All those following the oil sector will have watched the recent events in Algeria with horror.  Although information has been slow to filter out from a confused situation deep in the Sahara, at the time of writing it was known that one Algerian and 37 foreign workers had been killed after al-Qaida-inspired militants stormed two buses transporting workers from the housing compound of the Tigantourine gas plant, leading to a four-day siege at the In Amenas facility, with the workers held hostage.  Militant leader Mokhtar Belmokhtar claimed to have led the attack, which was ended after the bloody intervention of Algerian troops.

Norwest Energy, the ASX oil junior, has resumed operations at its Arrowsmith-2 shale gas well in the North Perth Basin of Western Australia. This is a key well for Norwest, which has pinned its fortunes on being an early mover in the country's fledgling shale gas industry. Reasons To Be Cheerful At Niko Resources Despite Ajek-1 Indonesia Disappointment

There are mixed feelings at Canadian indie Niko Resources this week after it discovered oil and gas in Indonesia, but not enough of it.It follows a number of other disappointing Indonesian wells in recent times which have cost a lot of money but delivered very little in return. But that has not deterred a management team with an appetite for adventure, and underpinned by a modest flow of production.

Afren On Track For Record Revenues As It Continues To Pile On The Barrels In Nigeria

Ahead of its full year results at the end of March, London-listed Afren has issued a positive update on its operations in Africa and the Middle East. Two thousand and twelve marked something of a gear change for the company, which in recent years has based its growth on the appraisal and development of fallow licences in Nigeria, which remains its powerbase. But last year the FTSE250 company began to pick up the pace on the exploration front, and has some significant successes under its belt

After the fiscal shocks of the past decade, there is evidence that investor confidence is returning to the North Sea, with high levels of capital investment and M&A activity in 2012.
