Conference Report 1: Kea Petroleum Finds Life Sweeter After Its First Commercial Oil Strike While Oilbarrel's Russia Expert Suggests The Oil Majors May Be Souring On Mega Projects In Kazakhstan

By Amy McLellan

As the so-called “beast from the east” sent temperatures sub-zero in the UK, there was a suitably Siberian touch to the air as delegates arrived at oilbarrel.com's 58th conference in the City of London. This was perhaps fitting as oilbarrel.com's resident Russia expert, the highly respected journalist Anthony Robinson, who was the FT's Moscow correspondent during some stormy years, was on hand to present his views of Kazakhstan.

This is widely acknowledged to be the best of the “Stans”, as President Nursultan Nazarbayev, described by Robinson as “smart as a snake”, has carefully marshalled stewardship of its natural resources and maintained a tight grip on power for more than two decades. “But who comes next, who comes after God” asked Robinson, raising the question of succession which has a number of country-watchers troubled.

Another regional worry point is the exit of US forces from Afghanistan. “It may end very badly as it has so often in Afghanistan but there might be some grounds for optimism this time because it's very interesting to see the countries around Afghanistan, especially China and Kazakhstan, are very very aware that an Afghanistan at peace could be an enormous advantage for the future of the entire region,” said Robinson. He pointed out that Turkmenistan has found massive gas reserves and that one of these fields crosses into Afghanistan.

“Twenty years ago the main markets for gas from Central Asia seemed to be Europe,” said Robinson.  “Now it's becoming increasingly clear that the oil and gas of Central Asia will either move east to China or south across Afghanistan to the hugely energy deficient high population, high grow areas of Pakistan and India. It's difficult to think of a more positive development than that – if it happens. Will Afghanistan again be a power vacuum or will it be filled with pipelines, railways and mines?”

Ian Gowrie Smith, Chairman/CEO of Kea Petroleum

Edge Resources Gets Busy With Spring 2013 Drilling Campaign In Saskatchewan

Edge Resources, which is dual listed on AIM and the TSX Venture Exchange, is challenging the accepted wisdom that heavy oil is expensive to extract.  The Calgary-headquartered company targets shallow heavy oil deposits on its lands in Primate, Saskatchewan, Canada, where it has found that even with a 20-25 per cent price discount to WTI the economics are compelling.

Europa Oil & Gas is one of those AIM companies – and there are a number of them –that have a fine business model for a small cap group with a good mix of production, development and highly prospective blue sky exploration.
