Supermarkets, Horses and Sleepy Kids

Hello Share Fans,
I am a long time holder of Morrisons the Supermarket (MRW). This is partly because I am a Yorkshire person and so are Morrisons - Bradford connection, I think.
Which is a very stupid reason to buy a share. It's as bad as backing a race horse because you quite like the name. But we all do things like this. It's a kind of superstition and that is bred into us by our far flung ancestors. One of my Viking forebears was Malcolm the Unavailable. I like to keep up the ancient family tradition.
I once used to buy share with quirky names. I told myself this was because the moniker would stick in people's mind, helping the business along. But it's not very convincing is it? One such firm I bought was a children's entertainment enterprise with the odd name of Sleepy Kids. The shares were asleep a lot of the time and the venture lost me a lot of money.

The Week Ahead AG Barr, Aberdeen Asset, TUI
Results from Irn-Bru maker AG Barr are due out on Monday, raising hopes that there may soon be an announcement regarding the Scottish firm's plans to take over its larger Chelmsford-based rival, Britvic.
Panmure Gordon reckons the firm's interim results are likely to be overshadowed by the merger talks. It is predicting the company will achieve top line growth of around 5% to GBP129.7m, but rising input costs, on-going brand investment and a deterioration in product mix is likely to result in a 6% decline in adjusted profit before tax to GBP15.6m, Panmure Gordon reckons, although a lower tax rate should results in adjusted earnings per share dipping just 1% or thereabouts.
"In the absence of further news regarding the possible merger with Britvic we expect the results to be a muted affair," the broker said.
The deadline for a firm offer being made is 5pm on October 3rd.
On the same day, Aberdeen Asset Management reports, and Peel Hunt is expecting "more of the same" from the fund manager.
"We expect a consistent trend in that higher margin equity inflows will more than compensate for outflows in fixed income," the broker said.
Thursday, as usual, is the busiest day of the week with heavyweights Compass, Tate & Lyle and TUI all set to update the market.
Regarding the latter, the consensus estimate for full-year earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) is GBP480m and TUI's management is confident of achieving this despite foressing a large negative foreign exchange impact. Broker Jefferies thinks that a weaker euro could hit fourth-quarter EBIT by up to GBP40m, implying underlying upgrades of 8%.

A book review by Luka Lukic of t1ps.com Keep it simple stupid. KISS is one of those acronyms most of us will have heard during our lives and yet how quickly we forget it when looking for new investment strategies. It is often though that you have to find some niche market with a company nobody has ever heard of if you want to make a big profit, but John Cotter argues that sometimes the best investment ideas come from simply observing the world around you. He noted some personal examples of investment success stories like ASOS, getting the idea from seeing his daughters browsing the online retailer's website, and easyJet after enjoying a number of pleasant flights with the airline (although some may argue that "easyJet" and "pleasant flights" do not belong in the same sentence).
