Minesite Weekly Roundup 17th - 24th September 2012

Dear Minesite subscriber,

Weekly Review

Over the past month, the uptick in commodities prices has given a battered sector some much-needed respite. The gold price in particular has grabbed attention, but other metals have risen too, including, notably, copper, up from US$3.40 per pound to US$3.72 per pound. Lead has also risen, from US85 cents to US$1.01 per pound. Nickel, palladium, platinum, potash, silver, tin and zinc are also up.

But thermal coal, uranium, tungsten, iron ore, and cobalt, have been fallers.

While it'd be foolish to generalise too much in the current climate of continuing uncertainty, it's clear that the commodities that are easier to trade have benefitted from an inflow of investment, while those that aren't haven't. Thus gold and silver are freely tradable on COMEX and around the world, while nickel, aluminium, copper, lead, zinc, and tin are all easily tradable on the London Metal Exchange.

Who is behind all this? Central bankers, that's who. Quantitative easing in the US, Japan, and the UK encourages a flow of assets out of cash and into anything that's tradable and that can hold its value against the onslaught of the printing press.

All of which bodes well for the companies that dig up the metals themselves, and for the investors that back them. Because even if gold has risen by around US$200 over the past month, from around US$1,600 to US$1,800, that still only amounts to a rise of 12.5 per cent.

Compare that to the rise put in by two companies in the news recently, and which we've been taking an interest in on Minesite – CGA Mining and Condor Gold. Shares in CGA began ticking up a few weeks ago, but really took off on 17th September, when Canadian mid-tier B2Gold tabled an all share for the company offer at C$3.18 per share, a premium of 26 per cent.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the development spectrum, but by co-incidence also tied into B2Gold through a joint venture in Nicaragua, shares in Condor Gold have jumped from 110.5p a month ago to a current price of 179p. That's a rise of nearly 40 per cent. Three months ago the shares were at a mere 48p, and three years ago, at a mere 10p.

In the junior space, clever stockpicking will always win out over clever bets on the commodities markets, albeit the attendant risks are greater. But here at Minesite we try to mitigate those risks by providing as much information on junior companies as we possibly can.

Hence our unparalleled editorial. And hence our popular forums, at which junior miners can present their stories direct to investors. Condor will be presenting later in the autumn, but our next event, to be held on Thursday 27th September at The Brewery, will consist of one fund manager offering his own individual insights, and several companies, each with their own unique investment proposition.

Don't miss it!

Recruitment showed little sign of quietening over the last quarter and the skilled nature of the jobs we are hosting indicates the shortage of highly experienced professionals. Succession planning will be a critical topic in the next few years as we continue to lose our most senior and mature people.
