| | Minesite Weekly Roundup 19th - 28th August 2013 | | | Dear Minesite subscriber, Gold has moved back over US$1,400 as traders fret about increased tensions over Syria, following a chemical weapons attack in Damascus. UN inspectors have drawn sniper fire, and a concerted military build-up is now underway in the eastern Mediterranean.
Whether the US, Britain and France will be stupid enough actually to attack remains to be seen. But the strength in gold serves as a reminder of the metal's millennia-old safe haven status. Strong physical demand over the past month or two has taken much of the sting out of the sharp drop in price in April. Indeed, Eric Sprott said over the weekend that he believes we are in the midst of a glaring supply crunch for physical gold.
According to this view, banks with short positions have been desperate to cover them. But these are now covered, opening the market back up to the bulls. Sprott notes that China now imports 1,200 tonnes of gold every year, as opposed to the 200 tonnes a year imported not so long ago. And although Indian demand is being artificially suppressed by government measures, there's huge growth potential there too. The net result is that Sprott reckons the gold price could double within a year.
Talking his own book? Perhaps. But if the yanks start throwing missiles into Syria, it won't be US dollars that investors pile into.
