THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS

Harry Potter and the Big Share Secret

By Malcolm Stacey

Hello Share Monkeys,

I heard the author of the Harry Potter books say on the radio that she could do what she wanted now because she can now pay her bills.

To do this, though, you need a supply of cash. You could sell shares to settle your bills, but this means you might have to sell them when shares have taken a hit on the stock exchange. Just as they are doing now.

To hold cash is not be forced into selling stock. And that is why you should not put every last penny into shares, no matter how confident you are.

The Week Ahead

Sainsbury and Tesco go head-to-head

There is a retail theme to next week's results, with supermarket giants Tesco and Sainsbury set to report, along with car products provider Halfords, homewares retailer Dunelm and fashion chain Ted Baker.

On the economic front, central banks will be in focus with the European Central Bank making its interest rate announcement on Thursday, a few hours of the Fed's statement in the US.

On Friday, the big announcement is the US non-farm payrolls figure for September, with the market expecting an increase of 116,000.

Panmure Gordon's view on the trading updates of supermarket rivals Tesco and Sainsbury is that, taking the long term view, neither is very important.

"Sainsbury's Q2 [second quarter] trading statement is not important in the context of what we expect will be significant changes to the food retailers' strategic priorities over the next 12 months. We expect space growth to slow, investment to shift online and ultimately significant and recurring returns of capital to shareholders," the retail team at Panmure Gordon opined.

"We look for similar like-for-like sales growth in Q2 to that seen in Q1, which delivered 1.4% (ex-fuel). We expect to see continued growth online at around double that recorded by Ocado," the broker added.

Looking at the supermarket sector as a whole, Panmure Gordon thinks the ending of the "space race" and the re-focus of investment online is "but the first step to making the sector investable again and the path that we have outlined should lead to a significant revaluation."

Seymoure Pierce wants to see how the aggressive money-off coupon campaign has affected sales and profitability at Tesco. "Attention will also be focused on whether the international business has slowed much from its Q1 [first quarter] update, particularly South Korea where new opening hour legislation was introduced at the end of Q1, as well as an update on the US where losses are still unacceptably high," the broker suggests.

The broker is forecasting a 6% fall in first half profit before tax to GBP1,603m and a flat dividend per share of 4.6p. "A fall in profits from the UK is expected to be partially offset by improvements in Asia, US and the bank and flat Europe," they predict.

The first quarter interim management statement from Dunelm sees the group going up easier comparatives figures, as a year ago like-for-like (LFL) sales were down 2.0% year-on-year (yoy).

"However, given the deterioration in market data, we expect a sharp slowdown in LFL sales and pencil in a flat quarter for Dunelm. Gross margin likely to show modest progress yoy," Peel Hunt suggests.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
Cotter on Investing

A book review by Aaron Padgham

Spread betters will all remember the time when one of their positions fell through its stop-loss, closing out the position by narrowest of margins, only for the price to rocket five minutes later! Cue the binary bet, a trading instrument that can immediately limit down-side risk. In Binary Trading John Piper introduces investors to relatively new concept of binary betting, in which punters can make the most outrageous moves in complete safety. The binary bet allows spread betters to bet on the particular outcome for a market, for example if the FTSE will close up. As the name infers, there can only be two possible outcomes, the FTSE closes up or down, and thus the investor gains or loses a pre-determined amount.

Soybean Recovers from Mid-July Low on USDA Report

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 11:38 AM PDT

Soybean prices soared today following the release of a report prepared by National Agricultural Statistics Service. The commodity fell to the lowest level since July 11 yesterday.

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported a major year-over-year drop in grain stockpiles for September. Soybean stocks fell 21 percent both on farms and off farms. Corn stocks fell 12 percent and all wheat stocks decreased 2 percent compared to September 2011. Additionally, the report mentions a positive revision of the grains’ yield figures for 2011.

Analysts expect a shift in the supply and demand equilibrium in favor of shortage. The consumption for the period of January-August 2012 rose 23 percent to 498 bushels compared to the same period of 2011. Global exporters may fail to meet the rising demand, pushing the price up.

Soybean November futures rose from $15.7350 to $16.0816 per bushel as of 18:34 on CBoT today. An intraday low was set at $15.7038 per bushel..

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Among quite a few notable developments this week, there was yet more news from Apple (AAPL). CEO Tim Cook apologized to customers for the fiasco that is the company's new mapping software. The apology appeared sincere and even went so far as to suggest that customers frustrated with the new Apple operating system use rival mapping apps. The apology was noteworthy because it's unusual for companies to apologize for their mistakes. Apple, especially when the late Steve Jobs was in charge, wasn't known for admitting fault.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) fell 48.84 points on Friday to close at 13,437.13, a 1.1% drop for the week. The index rose 4.3% in the third quarter. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP) fell 20.37 points or 0.7% on the day to close at 3,116.23 and registered a 2% decline for the week. For the quarter the technology centered index rose 6.2%. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 Index (SPX) dropped 6.48 points or 0.5% on Friday, a drop of 1.3% for the week. The benchmark index rose 5.8% for the quarter.

Check out MarketWatch over the weekend for all the news you need to organize you portfolio. We'll have complete coverage of all the news over the weekend. Meanwhile, if you're looking to get your week off to a good start, have a look at our weekly videos.

Europe's week ahead:ECB and Spain in focus

U.S. week ahead: Labor data due

— Christopher Noble , assistant managing editor

Spanish turmoil

Spain's new austerity budget and bank stress tests were relatively well received by market participants. The government impose more cutbacks to meet its budget deficit goals, reformed some institutions and said its banks were mostly in fairly good shape. Markets were fairly steady, but are investors just holding off in the expectation that the government will soon ask for a bailout? Spain is the only subject for EU markets .

RIM's respite

Surprisingly strong sales of Research In Motion's (RIMM) BlackBerry smartphones gave the besieged company a brief respite from bad news. The company's stock shot higher after it reported higher subscribers in the most recent quarter. Analysts weren't convinced that the tide has turned in its favor .

Hidden opportunities

As Asia's traditional engines of growth falter, Indonesia and the Philippines, the region's New Tiger economies, are poised to pick up the slack. Whether its tourism in the Philippines, or microfinance banking in Indonesia, industries in these countries are poised for growth and will attract new investors. Global investors can find hidden opportunities in Asia's New Tigers .

Late-summer glow

Wall Street was in an upbeat mood and indexes hit multiyear highs as the days shortened as fall approached. Markets climbed a high wall of worry and were boosted by the Federal Reserve's QE3 initiative. Every major stock mutual fund category registered gains in the quarter, but it isn't clear that trend will continue. Investors have reason to cheer, but are becoming more selective .

Commodities outlook

Many major commodities did well in the third quarter, but heading into the last three months of the year, the outlook is less bright for some as the world's economy keeps sputtering and recent monetary policy actions by central banks around the world kick in. Oil and gold may do well, but watch out for grains and sugar .

No victory

Obama made plenty of progress in his first term on issues ranging from health care, rescuing the auto industry and women's rights. But he did very little to rein in Wall Street. If anything he made a bad situation worse. Of course that hasn't stopped him from claiming victory on this front, too. Don't let him, because Wall Street may be more influential and dangerous than ever before says David Weidner .

Slow growth

With just 40 days to go before the election, the latest batch of economic data points to more of the same on the national economic front. The U.S. will continue to expand at a slow pace — and growth might even taper off a bit more. If President Barack Obama wins re-election, it isn't going to be because of a rapidly improving economy .

Market model

Would you be interested in a stock market timing model that not only was bearish at the stock market top in 2007, but also was screaming "buy" at the bottom in March 2009? Of course you would .

IPad control

More and more companies are allowing employees to use their personal mobile devices to access work email, calendars and company files. It's called BYOD, for "Bring Your Own Device", and it's handy and popular. But what employees may not know is that they give up a lot of privacy when they route work emails onto their own smartphone or tablet. How your boss can take control of your iPad .

Overvalued assets

Stocks have sold off since the Federal Reserve told the world it would be open season on risky assets as long as he's in charge, and maybe beyond. The Fed's plan to buy $40 billion of mortgage backed securities a month indefinitely may change investors' mind-set, but it doesn't change the fact that many asset classes are wildly overvalued. Three assets that are the most overvalued .
