The latest companies to join the JIP are Italian energy giant ENI and equipment manufacturer Oil States International, who have now added their support to a project that has already got Shell, Tullow, Maersk and Wintershall, among others, on board. Shares in the AIM-quoted company rose 10 pence to 116 pence on the news Full story... News: June 19, 2012 It seems to be one step forward, two back for AIM-quoted Independent Resources this year. In February there was much jubilation when its long-stalled Rivara gas storage project in Italy finally got the environmental clearance to move into the appraisal stage. This had been a long-awaited development for a highly strategic project that would add much needed flexibility and security to a country that has been at the sharp end of energy shortfalls from Libya and Russia over the past year. Full story... News: June 19, 2012 When Simba Energy first hit our radar in Spring 2010, it was seen by many as something of a longshot; a TSX Venture-newcomer targeting undrilled Liberia in West Africa. Two years on and the odds have definitely shortened in Simba’s favour as the Vancouver-based company has added to its Liberia starter asset with interests in Guinea, Mali and, most significantly, Kenya Full story... News: June 18, 2012 When TomCo Energy appeared at oilbarrel.com’s May conference, chief executive Paul Rankine was tasked with presenting a project that has more affinity with our sister website Minesite.com than traditional oil and gas exploration. “We are mining in Utah,” confirmed Rankine, who has 25 years in the natural resources industry, half of it as a fund manager and half running mining companies and working at the coal face. And the material being mined is kerogen, immature oil locked inside vast oil shale deposits that stretch across large expanses of the emptiness of Wyoming, Utah and Colorado. Full story... News: June 18, 2012 For a country of such size it should not come as a surprise that Kazakhstan is well endowed with natural resources. Uranium, copper and zinc, together with agricultural commodities are in abundance, but fossil fuels provide the majority of exports. So much so that the government is keen to diversify, but given current global economic circumstances you take what you are given. Full story... Market Overview: June 15, 2012 In a month of uncertainty in the economic and geopolitical arena, OPEC ministers met in Vienna and decided to leave output unchanged; sort of. Adhering to the previously agreed production ceiling of 30 million barrels a day will in fact mean taking oil off the market. In early trading on Friday, Brent Crude was close to US$98 with WTI above US$84 a barrel. Full story... News: June 14, 2012 In the current market cash is king and those companies with access to capital are well placed to buy up distressed rivals struggling to access funding. Tom Cross, the former head of Dana Petroleum who walked away with over £50 million after the E&P he founded back in 1994 was sold to KNOC for £1.87 billion in 2010, has a reputation for making opportunistic plays and being a hard-nosed negotiator. These are traits he has already displayed with enthusiasm in his new role as executive chairman of The Parkmead Group, which saw its share price more than double in October 2010 on news that Cross had taken the helm and, at times over the past 12 months, have risen to levels completely disconnected to the actual asset base. Full story... News: June 14, 2012 Once the domain of failed oil explorers, gas is now a highly attractive resource that tops many a country’s fuel list for their future energy policy. Norwest Energy is one of a half dozen or so ASX listed shale gas companies that are following North America’s lead in the development of a major domestic shale gas industry. Full story... News: June 13, 2012 Shares in Nautical Petroleum soared 55 per cent in morning trading after Cairn Energy made a £414 million all-cash bid for the North Sea heavy oil specialist. Cairn, its coffers still bulging with over US$1.1 billion in cash even after February’s US$3.5 billion giveaway to shareholders, has offered 450 pence per share for Nautical, which represents a premium of 51 per cent to Tuesday’s closing price.
