Minesite Weekly Roundup 30th July - 5th August 2013
Dear Minesite subscriber,
Weekly Review

What will Diggers & Dealers be like this year? We'll know shortly when Our Man in Oz files his report, just as soon as he can get over there after a trip on the way to the opening of Sandfire's DeGrussa mine.

But a clue lies in an article published in the West Australian last week, and picked up in London by the keen-eyed boys at RFC Ambrian.

Leading on the latest write-down at Alacer, the West Australian took the opportunity to highlight the scale of the write-downs that have recently been decimating the balance sheets of the Aussie miners.

In some cases the write-downs are even bigger than the company in question. Silver Lake has flagged up write down of between A$320 million and A$370 million, as against a market capitalisation of A$262 million, according to data provided by Ambrian.

And Kingsgate Consolidate has written down A$320 million worth of assets as against a market capitalisation of A$234 million.

Other notable write-downs include Alacer (A$456 million), Western Areas (between A$90 million and A$100 million), Ramelius (A$58 million), OZ (between A$200 million and A$240 million), Resolute (A$70 million), and Newmont (A$2.3 billion).

So will the parties in Kalgoorlie be as hard and wild this year as in previous years? One would think not.

Nevertheless, deals are still getting done. In the latest, Orion has signed a deal with Mark Creasy for land on Fraser Range. For all the latest, be sure to check in to Our Man in Oz's report later in the week.
