 | | | Minesite Weekly Roundup 21st - 29th October 2013 | | | | Dear Minesite subscriber, The news from Greenland this week that it will now allow uranium mining drew a mixed reaction. On the ASX, as we report in this week's Australian market roundup, shares in Greenland Minerals and Energy (GGG) rose by 18 per cent.
But mainstream newspapers were conflicted. On the one hand it was a victory for self-determination and the right of indigenous people to decide on their own future.
On the other, commentators agonized that the economics of mining in Greenland have been made more palatable by the inevitable march of global warming.
And then there is the environmental objection – the threat to the "pristine ecological system", as the Guardian termed it. Why Greenland's ecological system is any more or less "pristine" than anywhere else's wasn't explained.
But in a sense it is pristine - huge swathes of this vast territory are utterly and completely devoid of life – no plants, no birds, nothing at all, apart from small Danish garrisons and the occasional wandering geologist.
If this isn't the ideal territory in which to go mining for the world's raw materials, then nowhere is and we might as well pack up all the technological kit and luxury that makes life bearable in the 21st century and return to a lifestyle of hunting and gathering.
It's time we abandoned the 18th century idea of the sublime as something sacred and not to be touched, and got back to reality. The Greenlanders are showing the way. | 96th Minesite Forum - 5th December 2013 |
