Minesite Weekly Roundup 3rd - 10th December 2012 Dear Minesite subscriber, Weekly Review This year's outstanding achievement award at the Mines & Money dinner went to J. David Lowell, a worthy winner given his immense contribution to the understanding of copper porphyry deposits, and ways and means of finding them. Escondida was one of his, but not the only one. Kalamazoo and Vento Halls in Arizona also owe their discovery to him, as do Caza Grande West and Far Southeast in the Philippines. The list is by no means exhaustive. Geologists around the world still use the techniques and understanding he pioneered and promoted, not least the team of grey hairs at London-listed but US-focused VANE Minerals, where Clark Arnold and Steve Van Nort constantly cite J. David Lowell as an inspiration. VANE has been on the hunt for copper porphyries for a little while now and has yet to make the really big find that punters long for. But Clark and Steve have no doubt that J. David Lowell points the way. After all, Lowell himself wasn't an overnight sensation. He graduated with his MS in geology in 1957, and his first two major discoveries didn't come until eight years later in 1965. Escondida wasn't until 1981. Along the way there were bear markets and bull markets, and booms and busts. But Lowell kept going. In more recent years he discovered several large gold deposits in South America, and even now he is still out there looking. So for any investors nursing wounds in the current bearish climate, the message is simple: pick the right people to back and stick with them. With sentiment fickle, governments printing money, and economies on the downturn, there really is no other way.
