Minesite Weekly Roundup 17th December 2012 - 2nd January 2013 Dear Minesite subscriber, Weekly Review Will 2013 be better for junior miners than 2012 was? Opinion on that seems divided. China will continue to grow, and as Rob Davies points out in our 2013 Commodities analysis piece, the world economy as a whole will grow too. We will witness the largest consumption of commodities ever known. On the whole, that's bullish. But there's also the question of supply. Metals like zinc, nickel, aluminium and platinum are in surplus, and copper is finely poised. In that context it's hardly surprising that the appetite amongst investors for providing capital to find new metal is limited. It's a slightly more complex picture in the gold space, where prices remain high, and the potential margin on mines remains good. The problem investors have faced here is the long-standing underperformance of gold mining equity prices as against the gold price. It used to be a commonplace, in the early days of the boom, that gold equities provided greater leverage to rising gold prices as the corresponding relative improvement in margins outstripped any actual rise in the price. Such subtleties are no longer common coin. Instead, fund managers, under pressure from their own investors, are looking for scapegoats. No one says gold miners provide better leverage these days. Instead, they are berated for providing meagre returns. Berated, and worse - high profile sackings, including that of Kinross's Tye Burt, were on the rise last year. Expect more to come this year. And more dividends, as directors scramble to provide returns for their investors in a bid to safeguard their own jobs.
