Tullow Oil Makes Basin-Opening Oil Strike In The Barents Sea As Investors Hope The FTSE 100 Company Has A Return To Form

Two thousand and thirteen  has, so far, been a bumpy ride for Tullow Oil as its previous golden touch with the drillbit proved elusive, with one well after another coming back empty handed.  This dry spell included a run of expensive disappointments off French Guiana and sub-commercial gas finds offshore East Africa and Cote d'Ivoire.  Last week, however, nervous investors hailed news of a breakthrough discovery in Norway's Barents Sea.

Poweralternatives:Veteran Oilman Algy Cluff Returns To The North Sea With Pioneering Plan To Convert Subsea Coal Fields Into Clean-burning Syngas

Forty years ago, North Sea pioneer Algy Cluff was wildcatting for oil when, to his disgust, he drilled through a thick coal seam. A US colleague looked at the well data and surmised there was enough coal under the North Sea to keep Europe going for two thousand years.  Cluff, of course, went on to make his fortune with Cluff Oil, finding the Buchan oilfield in 1975, the 14th commercial oil strike in the North Sea and still producing today, before traversing Africa as a successful mining entrepreneur, making some major finds, including a giant gold deposit in Tanzania, the largest gold discovery in Africa since World War II.

Oil Prices Buoyant As Geopolitcal Issues Continue To Dominate the Headlines

In anticipation of strong economic data from the world’s biggest consumer, the oil price nudged upwards as we closed the week. In early trading on Friday, Brent crude was priced around US$115 with WTI trading above US$108 a barrel. However, the job figures turned out to be mixed overall by late on on Friday.

Matra Petroleum Sells Its Difficult Sokolovskoe Oilfield And Reinvents Itself As An AIM Investing Company

Summer 2013 marked a new start for troubled Matra Petroleum, which had been brought low after its Sokolovskoe field in the Orenburg region of Russia proved far more complex than first thought, with wells serially under-shooting management expectations.  By early summer of this year, the AIM-quoted company, now under the leadership of Maxim Barskiy who last year injected £4.6 million of capital to take an almost 30 per cent shareholding, decided to dispose of the asset and start again
