Minesite Weekly Roundup 2nd - 9th September 2013
Dear Minesite subscriber,
Weekly Review

Ocean Equities will hold its annual September conference this week, and in line with a general trend in the mining sector it's much smaller than it used to be. Companies in particular are smaller: as we report today the UK majors have written down fully US$31 billion lately, and there may yet be more to come.

Other things are much reduced too, like dealflow, capital raisings, and headcounts at brokerages.
But investor appetite appears to be on the increase again, at least anecdotally. There's been a temporary fillip from the new rules about ISAs, word from Canada is that the street is a little bit more positive, and some commodities continue to trade strongly.

Like iron ore, the subject of the Ocean conference. At US$134 per tonne, the price is at a resolutely higher level than a whole plethora of doom-sayers thought it would be at this time last year.

Does that mean that real price strength is back, or that the price is over-cooked and heading for a fall? Opinion is divided. At Ocean, which has a fairly long history of iron ore deals, they are bullish.
And given that they have forty investors of the institutional kind signed up to meet just four iron ore companies, they have good reason.

In his weekly review, seasoned market watcher David Hargreaves reports that the mood amongst producers is "still positive". This is supported by certain interesting snippets of data. For example, Port Headland shipped 22 million tonnes in August, up 33 per cent on last year, when the price was US$89 per tonne.

With economic growth picking up around the world, further "positive" reports are likely. But it's early days yet, and there are plenty grounds for caution when picking out individual companies to back.
So, if you can't make it to conferences like Ocean's to check companies out for yourself, Minesite is always here to provide the next best thing to one-on-one meetings.

We never recycle press releases - our stories always carry interviews with company directors. This week we'll be talking to Amara, Red Rock, Firesteel, and Volta to name but a few. And in the meantime, below is the complete rundown of stories we covered last week.
