Dixons - Conflicting Signals

Dixons (DXNS) - Conflicting Signals

It has to be admitted that during 2012 there were plenty of conflicting signals both on a technical and fundamental basis regarding retailer Dixons. The fact that a key member of the management left to join Apple (APPL) (leaving just months later) meant that you had be pretty sure of yourself in going long at the end of January/beginning of favourite on the multi-tested 200 day moving average rebound. That said, early in January we had been treated to a gap higher through the 50 day moving average, what can be classed as a longer term buy signal. This certainly proved to be the case in terms of what happened during the rest of 2012, although it was arguably June when the real fireworks started on the technical front.

2012 Price Action

This is said on the basis that the month started off with a bear trap below the 10 day moving average which was counteracted by bullish divergence in the RSI window. It was also followed quite quickly by a gap higher through the 200 day moving average, which was by now rising, and backing up the idea of a mid-move consolidation on the early 2012 recovery to be followed by an extended leg to the upside. In fact, the expected target at the top of a rising trend channel was already achieved by early November. This meant that while some may be thinking of profit-taking, the fact that the stock found support well above former October resistance during the first part of November, meant that it was still fair to be looking for fresh gains towards as high as 30p by the turn of the year.

The difference between the buy share price and the sell share price for smaller company shares (penny shares) can be significant. Profits from dealing in shares may be liable to tax - the level of tax and bases of relief from tax are subject to change. Changes in the rates of exchange may have an adverse effect on the value or price of an investment in sterling terms if it is denominated in a foreign currency. Financial spread betting is a high risk investment, losses from which are potentially unlimited.

Some of the share tips on this site will be smaller company shares. By their nature such investments can be relatively illiquid and thus hard to trade. And that makes such investments more of a high risk than larger company shares (or 'small caps'/'penny shares'). UK-Analyst.com defines a smaller company share as any stock traded on AIM or PLUS or which has a market capitalisation of less than £300 million.
